This is so important! Every kid deserves to find something in a book that they can relate to. The illustration is exuberant and energetic. And I see it every day in many of the children’s faces who I share music with. I remember so well feeling and thinking what the song expresses. This song is of kids turning yearning into self empowerment. It immediately latched on and made me WANT (need) to sing it. When I originally listened to the Matilda musical soundtrack, this song stuck with me.
Finding this illustration felt like a miracle. I’m grateful for the grant and to be able to sing this song. I stumbled on the pre-order for this a few weeks ago and it just arrived today, thanks to a Tuckahoe Elemenary School PTA grant. Music is a language all it’s own (using symbols to represent sounds). In doing this, it is fun to remind kids that music is not just something we enjoy listening to. I’m still learning it (as it is a tricky song to sing) but I decided to invite the kids in to the journey of learning a song and some of the musical skills one has to master in order to do that.
